A former professional player Paul was  appointed Head Coach of British Basketball League team the Worcester Wolves in December 2009. His career in basketball started out for his hometown team Leicester All-Stars. He made his league debut on September 26, 1981, just weeks after his 17th birthday, against local rivals Nottingham. Having enjoyed seven successful years at the All-Stars (now known as the Riders) he moved south to sign for Bracknell Tigers in 1988.

After nine years as a player, He was promoted to Head Coach of the Tigers in 1997, a position retained until 2005 when the franchise was pulled from the league. However, that summer the Guildford Heat was founded by a few dedicated Tigers supporters and Coach James. A new club was born and the Heat took its place in the BBL. In just three seasons, Coach James led the new franchise to fifth place in it's rookie season and BBL League and Cup double in 2006 / 2007. In 2007 / 2008 the Heat finished Runner up in the BBL League and won the BBL Trophy, BBL Cup Winners Cup and the coveted BBL Play-off Championship. Coach James also coached his Heat team in the prestigious ULEB cup competition against the likes of DKV Juventut, KK Bosna, Alba Berlin, Turk Telekom and Siauliai, gaining tremendous experience.

Coach James was voted the 2006 , 2007 BBL Coach of the Season and narrowly missed out getting it again in 2007 / 2008.

In the 2008 / 2009 season, his team won the BBL Cup Winners Cup, came runners up in the BBL Trophy and finished third in the BBL Championship.

The summer of 2010 Coach James was appointed the England Senior men Head Coach and the GB Under 23 Futures team Assistant Coach.
