The History of the Worcester Wolves.

The Worcester Wolves story so far…

The club was formed in May 2000 by Roger Clarke and Mick Donovan with its home venue at the ‘state of the art’ sports centre at University College Worcester. Our first season (2000/01) in Division Three saw the Wolves come runners up to Bristol - only losing two league games. On average, the home crowd numbered 400 and we made the magical 500 for our win over Bristol.

Following successes on and off the court, the Wolves were promoted to the then Division One for the 2001/02 season. We learned quickly about the higher level, finishing ninth in the league. In the community, our coaching staff are working with over 300 children in the County's schools. The Wolves Saturday morning training sessions attract over 50 boys and girls. University College Worcester Basketball Scholarships became available in September 2002 for talented players to study and play at the same time.

At the beginning of the 2003/04 season, we strengthened the team considerably, our biggest signing being Ty Shaw from Idaho. This was the most successful season for the Wolves so far. We won the Patron's Cup, were runners up in EBL Division 2, won the Play Off Final and gained promotion to Division 1.

We signed Richard Onions from Walsall Wizards, Barry Lamble from Team Bath Romans and former Crusader Robert Clarke at the beginning of the new season and were lying 7th in Division 1 at Christmas. We then added point guard, Matt Collins, also from Coventry Crusaders, finished fourth in the league and made all three semi-finals. We also formed a development team which competed well in Division 3 West.

Development for the 2005/06 season began early with the announcement that Josh Cooprider would take over as Head Coach. On court, we signed Valdas Urbonavicius from Lithuania, and Andy Harper from Albertson College, Idaho, USA. The team captaincy was shared between Matt Collins and Ty Shaw. The Wolves made the top of the Division 1 table on 14th January and stayed there for a month. The highlight of the season was the spectacular victory over City of Sheffield Arrows in the National Trophy Final at the Coventry SkyDome on Sunday 5th February, with Harper gaining the MVP award with a career-best performance. A couple of poor results saw the Wolves slip to finish fifth in the league.

Late June 2006 saw the dramatic announcement that the Wolves would join the British Basketball League in the new season. It was very much a ‘baptism of fire’, with the Wolves winning just five games out of thirty-eight.

Key signings from around the World have arrived this year under the leadership of new Head Coach Skouson Harker.
